Lighthouse Bodega Project

Introduction

The original meaning of a bodega in Spanish culture is a wine cellar. Wine lovers know that the best wine ages over time. In our area, we know our kids are struggling to make it past the age of 21 due to the violence in the city. We want our young folks to have the opportunity to age well over time. This project is meant to give youth local to west Kensington an opportunity to learn and grow both personally and professionally.

Participants will find value in long term work toward personal and professional goals.

Project Description

Using the support of local business owners, Philadelphia youth will learn to plan for, budget, open and run a bodega
on the grounds of the Lighthouse Sports Complex.

Stipends for Participation

15 student participants: $250 per participant after completion of the 6 week program.

The Lighthouse is beyond excited for our third round of The Bodega Project! This project will run twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 3:45 pm to 5:45 pm, from April 7, 2026 to May 12, 2026. 

Students will get a chance to learn from business owners, as well as about what it takes to create their own. The program will culminate in an amazing closing ceremony, where all the students showcase what they have learned. Every participant will receive a certificate of completion as well as a $250 stipend upon their full completion of the program. 

**PLEASE NOTE: Regular attendance and participation is mandatory. Failure to do so may result in removal from the program or not receiving your stipend at the completion of the program.  There are limited spots, so only individuals who are available to attend most, if not all, sessions should register, and these individuals should have an interest in entrepreneurship, business, and/or leadership.**

By registering your child for this, you understand that your child will be traveling to various business locations around the city for about half of the sessions. You registering your child provides consent that you are aware of and approve of these travel plans.
